Mike Milmerstadt discovered his love for martial arts at a young age and always aspired to become a police officer, like his uncle. Upon joining the
Orange County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy and later joining the SWAT team, Mike quickly distinguished himself among his colleagues with his
defensive tactics and Jiu Jitsu expertise. He was frequently found in the gym, either honing his own skills or generously training other
officers in defensive maneuvers at no cost.
Mike was married to his high school sweetheart, Melanie, and together they were raising three sons: Roman (5), Noah (4), and Xander (1). They enjoyed a life
that many would consider perfect, filled with love and happiness.
On March 20, 2023, Mike and his family’s idyllic life was abruptly changed. During a routine training session at the gym, Mike suffered a severe head injury.
Despite the relentless prayers and support from loved ones and colleagues, nothing could be done to save him. On March 23, Mike’s family made the
difficult decision to place him on life support. This choice allowed Mike’s organs to be donated, honoring his spirit of selflessness.
On March 26, Mike gave the ultimate gift, saving the lives of eight individuals through organ donation.
Throughout Mike’s hospitalization, his family was surrounded by unwavering love and support from both his friends and the OCSO. Their presence was
a source of tremendous comfort during the most difficult week the family had ever faced. At no point were Mike’s family members left alone
or lacking in essentials. The Sheriff’s Office ensured that every need was met—providing food, baby supplies, and other necessities. With their
youngest son just a year old and still breastfeeding, it was essential for him to remain at the hospital with Melanie. The OCSO SWAT team and other
Sheriff’s Office members were constantly by their side, offering not only practical assistance but also emotional support. They enveloped the family in
care, doing everything possible to ease their burden. This steadfast support made a profound difference. Without the compassion and generosity shown by
Mike’s friends and colleagues, the family would not have been able to endure such a trying time.
Mike lived each day guided by his personal motto, “Earn the Day,” and was deeply committed to supporting his fellow First Responders. In recognition of his unwavering dedication and selflessness, we have founded The Michael Milmerstadt Earn the Day Foundation. The foundation’s purpose is to support the families of First Responders who face crises or losses similar to those we endured alongside Mike.
During times of hardship, our foundation stands ready to offer immediate and meaningful assistance to the loved ones of First Responders. We understand the challenges that arise when a family is confronted with a sudden crisis, and our aim is to alleviate some of that burden through compassionate support.
Through these efforts, we strive to honor Mike’s legacy by continuing his spirit of service and helping First Responder families when they need it most.
